Daily Doop: Kicking off the Holidays, MacMath is back and This "Poe" is for you

Our weekend installment of all things Union

You can’t escape getting into the holiday spirit especially around Union HQ, as our marketing department and their little worker elves (a.k.a interns) are transforming PPL Park into a winter wonderland ahead of Saturday’s “Kick off the Holidays” party starting at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow. If you haven’t heard, it’s a chance for our fans to come take Christmas pictures in the River End, hang out, watch MLS Cup (4:30 p.m., ESPN, Telefutura) and play some FIFA 13 all in the Stadium Club.

For our season ticket holders, tomorrow gives you special access for a holiday photo inside the Union locker room, which as you can see is all dolled up for the occasion. We hear Union defenders Chris Albright and Sheanon Williams are scheduled to attend.

Moving on…

Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath, fresh off his two week training stint at Everton was at PPL Park this morning to meet with a few reporters. MacMath spoke about training at Everton alongside U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard, taking in the Euro experience and his hair-raising vacation to the Bahamas to Union writer Andy Jasner for an upcoming piece scheduled to run Monday on philadelphiaunion.com.

Midfielder Danny Cruz was on his offseason grind today, posting this photo of his offseason workout session via Instagram on Twitter. If you follow the post, you’ll see teammate and resident jokester Antoine Hoppenot had something to say about Cruz’ #doubters hashtag.

In the news…

Philly.com’s Jonathan Tannenwald caught up with ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman Wednesday and wrote this blog post entitled “What Philadelphia Union fans can learn from the Los Angeles Galaxy and Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup Final” A little lengthy (both the headline and the blog post), but it provided some solid insight from Twellman who expertly used Houston to debunk the myth that you need high profile, high salary players to be a contender in MLS.

Which is true, but then what does that make Los Angeles – the exception to the rule?

With that being said, Philly Soccer Page’s Eli Pearlman-Storch says why going against the big money guys is your best bet when watching Saturday’s finale. Check that out MLS Cup preview here…MLSSoccer.com writer Dave Zeitlin caught up with Union midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin, back from Germany after his first international training stint with Hoffenheim for this feature.  Lastly, because we call can use a chuckle; check out this gem we found on ESPNFC.com.

Man, that ESPN Insider Pass is already paying dividends.

Enjoy your weekend, catch you all Monday.
