Union Top Universidad de Guadalajara

Fred Notches Training Session's Lone Goal

Guadalajara, Mexico (March 2, 2010) – Philadelphia Union topped Universidad de Guadalajara of the Mexican Liga Ascenso (Mexican Second Division) 1-0 in a Tuesday afternoon training session. Midfielder Fred netted the session’s only goal in the 65th minute on an assist from trialist JT Noone.

“It was a very hard match to play, filled with fouls and breaks,” said Team Manager Peter Nowak. “But it was a good result at the end, and we seem to have improved our defensive and offensive play. We should have scored more goals though, not just the one scored by Fred. The goal was a very good sequence from the whole team, and a very good finish by Fred. It was good to finish this game with a positive result. But as always, now we have to go back to work and then head to Tampa to finish shaping our team for the MLS season.”

With each club scoreless nearing the midway point of the second half, Fred collected a pass from All-American Temple product JT Noone near the edge of the box and fired a powerful shot that found its way between the goalkeeper and inside post.

“It was a counter attack from the midfield,” explained Fred. JT [Noone] sent a long pass that found me alone on the left corner of the box. So I took the shot and it ended up in the back of the net.”

The 1-0 result came on the heels of a 2-2 draw against Chivas de Guadalajara in a Sunday training session.

“As every game we’ve played so far has been, today’s game was good preparation for us in order to get used to each other on the field and achieve the goals set by the Technical Staff,” added Fred. “Despite the fact that it was a difficult game, we were able to set some guidelines and create the system of play demanded by Manager Nowak.”
