Fred Forced to Leave Match vs LA

Midfielder cut above eye early, receives stitches in locker room

Union midfielder Fred was bleeding profusely above his eye after being elbowed in the head by Juninho and had to be replaced by Kyle Nakazawa in the 14th minute of what wound up being a 1-0 loss to the LA Galaxy Thursday night at PPL Park.

Fred walked off the field on his own power with head trainer Paul Rushing applying pressure to the wound with a towel. Moments later the midfielder proceeded to head to the locker room. He didn't return.

“It was pretty disappointing for Fred because I’m sure he wanted to stay in the game,” Union Manager Peter Nowak said after the match.

Fred received stitches in the locker room, and he will be re-evaluated on Friday.

“The doctors took care of him,” Nowak said. “I hope he’s not going to have any problems with headaches or concussions.”

Fred has three goals and one assist this season in 24 starts.
