Home Schedule to End with a Bang
Chester, Pa. (October 15, 2010) – Philadelphia Union plan to close out their inaugural home season on Saturday against the New York Red Bulls with an exciting, jam-packed program that will honor the fans and various other individuals who helped to make the 2010 season a success.
The day will begin with a check presentation of the $50,000 Pepsi Refresh grant won by Philadelphia Union to build a full sized natural grass field for Chester City United and the City of Chester. The Union and Pepsi Refresh Ambassador Alejandro Moreno drummed up enough fan votes to beat out the other 15 MLS teams for the grant. Mayor Wendell Butler, Chester Upland School District Superintendent Dr. Joyce Wells and Chester City United founder Pat Trippley, along with Moreno, will all be on hand for the presentation.
Trippley will also be honored at a halftime ceremony, as she won Philadelphia Union’s 2010 MLS W.O.R.K.S./Home Depot Community MVP award. A Major League Soccer initiative, the Community MVP award recognizes the impact that a single individual can have on a community when combining sports and service to promote good will.
At the conclusion of the match, there will be a special year-end presentation that includes members of the team and Manager Peter Nowak, a highlight video, a T-shirt giveaway and multiple fireworks displays. The program will last approximately 15 minutes.
The game will also raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer, as the teams will each be sporting pink ribbon patches on their jerseys and play with a pink adidas match ball. Several players will also be wearing pink gloves, pink shoes and pink shoelaces to showcase their support. Game worn autographed jerseys and the special-edition pink match balls will be available for auction at www.mlssoccer.com/works beginning today as a part of League efforts to raise money for breast cancer research and treatment. Limited edition Breast Cancer Awareness adidas products will be available for purchase and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen for a Cure.
