Recap: Union reserves fall 3-1 to Toronto FC

Pfeffer scores but two own goals undo Philadelphia against TFC

Wallingford, Pa. (October 16, 2011) - The morning after Philadelphia Union’s first team punched their ticket to the MLS Cup Playoffs with a 1-1 draw over Toronto FC, the club’s reserves did not fare as well, falling 3-1 to Toronto at Chester Park.

Zach Pfeffer netted a goal for the Union but two own goals by the Union defense proved to be the difference. Javier Martina also scored for Toronto.

Morgan Langley got the Union started with two shots early but Toronto FC goalkeeper Chad Bush thwarted both attempts. Keith Makubuya gave the visitors their first big chance in the eighth minute but the shot sailed high and wide of the goal.

Both teams continued to pepper the goalkeepers but could not convert. Toronto stepped up the offensive pressure, earning five straight corner kicks but could not break the deadlock until the 27th minute when Martina blasted a shot in the bottom left corner of the goal.

Toronto added to their lead 10 minutes later when Stefan Vukovic dribbled down the right side of the field and sent a ball into the box that deflected off of Union defender Ryan Richter just past the reach of goalkeeper Chase Harrison to make it a 2-0 game at the half.

Langley had a few chances to put Philly on the board in the opening minutes of the second stanza, his best chance a rocket that just sailed over the cross bar. The Swarthmore College product continued to push down the right side, sending a ball into the box for Danny Mwanga. Mwanga flicked the ball around a defender to Pfeffer, who placed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-1 in the 60th minute.

The comeback bid was short lived, however, as another Union own goal made it 3-1 in favor of Toronto in the 81st minute. The teams continued to battle but neither would find the back of the net again, preserving the 3-1 victory for Toronto FC.

The Union wrapped up the 2011 MLS Reserve League slate with a 2-7-1 record.
