Union quartet wrap up Generation adidas tour
Amobi Okugo, Danny Mwanga, Jack McInerney and Zac MacMath wrapped up their Generation adidas tour match schedule on Wednesday, falling 2-0 to Dutch second-flight side Almere City FC in the third of three contests. Less than 24 hours earlier, Generation adidas secured their lone victory on the trip, edging second-division side FC Volendam despite finishing with 10 men.
In the 3-2 win on Tuesday, Okugo and Mwanga each registered an assist. After Columbus Crew midfielder Dilly Duka’s got Generation adidas on the board with a swerving free kick, the MLS side came close to increasing their lead on several occasions in the early part of the first half, led by stellar midfield play by Okugo and Duka. However, FC Volendam scored next, leveling the match at 1-1 against the run of play in the 25th minute.
In the 50th minute, Okugo picked off a pass and slotted a through ball to Houston Dynamo forward Will Bruin, who finished to put GA back on top.
They added to their lead just five minutes later when Mwanga – a halftime substitution – got free on the left side and served a ball into Vancouver Whitecaps forward Omar Salgado, who spun and unleashed a shot to the top corner.
McInerney was sent off for dissent in the 76th minute, helping Volendam pull a goal back in the 82nd minute, but Generation adidas were able to hold on for the win.
In the victory, Okugo started and came off in the 65th minute, McInerney came on in the 56th minute, Mwanga came on at the break, while MacMath didn't see the field.
In Wednesday's tour finale, all four Union players started. Okugo and Mwanga played all 90 minutes, while MacMath and McInerney each came off at the half.
All four Union players also started the tour opener, a 4-2 loss to the Ajax reserves.
The Generation adidas squad will return to the US on Thursday after finishing the tour with one win and two losses. Okugo, McInerney and MacMath will head directly to the U-23 U.S. National Team camp in Florida, where they'll be joined by Sheanon Williams and Freddy Adu.
