CHESTER, Pa. - Immediately following Philadelphia Union's 1-0 first team win over the Columbus Crew, the two clubs squared off in MLS Reserve League action at PPL Park, with the Crew topping the Union 4-0. Columbus striker Emilio Renteria tallied a first-half hat trick and second-year midfielder Cole Grossman added another goal in a convincing victory that turned chippy in the 45th minute.

Renteria opened the scoring in the 12th minute, beating Union goalkeeper Chris Konopka with a laser strike to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.

The fourth-year MLS forward -- who scored eight first team goals in only 1,159 minutes last season -- added another goal in the 20th minute off a Columbus corner kick. Defender Nemanja Vukovic served in a perfect cross and Renteria made no mistake with his header to give the Crew a 2-0 lead.

The Union's best first-half chance came in the 27th minute when rookie striker Antoine Hoppenot evaded the Crew defense in the area and laid a ball off for onrushing Home Grown midfielder Zach Pfeffer, who struck an uncontested one-timer from 15 yards over the crossbar.

Philadelphia had another scoring opportunity in the 32nd minute when Home Grown midfielder Jimmy McLaughlin found Pfeffer outside the penalty box, but the 17-year-old's curling effort to the near post from 25 yards out was knocked out for a corner by Crew goalkeeper Matt Lampson.

Columbus struck again through Renteria in the 37th minute after 2010 number two overall pick Tony Tchani dribbled down the right flank and sent in a cross, which found its way through traffic to Renteria at the far post. With no defender to contend with, Renteria tapped home for a 3-0 advantage.

Columbus continued to pour it on just four minutes later after a scramble in the area. Bernardo Anor gained possession and laid a pass off for Grossman, who curled a shot within the far post for a 4-0 lead heading into the break.

The final moments of the first half and the remainder of the match produced no goals but plenty of physical play. Renteria and Union rookie midfielder Greg Jordan were both shown red in the 45th minute after a scuffle, and both Tchani (two yellows) and Justin Meram (straight red) were ejected in the second half, leaving Columbus to finish the match with just seven field players.

Despite the two-man advantage, the Union were unable to capitalize. Academy striker Darius Madison fired two promising shots late, but both were denied by Lampson. Earlier, forward Jack McInerney nearly snuck a 25-yard free kick between Lampson and the crossbar, but the Home Grown 'keeper was able to get his fingertips to the ball and tap it out for a corner.

Konopka's best save came in the 69th minute after Crew academy member Rhodes Moore cut inside, beat two defenders and struck a right-footed shot on target, but the Union 'keeper cut off the angle and knocked away the close-range effort.

With the victory, the Crew reserves move to 3-1-0, while the Union reserves move to 1-1-0.
