Young Philadelphia Union midfielder Zach Pfeffer has spoken of his delight at captaining the club’s U-17 side to the final of this summer’s Generation adidas (GA) Cup as he and his teammates prepare for today’s 3 p.m. ET showdown with Toronto FC’s U-17 squad in Seattle.

The Pennsylvania-born player has been a vital part of coach Jim Curtin’s side which topped its respective group before thrashing San Jose 5-1 at the semi-final stage on Tuesday, with Pfeffer weighing in with three assists in the game.

"We're all very excited to be playing in the final of this great tournament,” Pfeffer told philadelphiaunion.com. “I think the entire team has done very well so far and we deserve to be at this stage.

This year’s tournament, taking place at Seattle Sounders’ training facilities, is the third GA Cup in which Pfeffer has competed and it is an event for which he has only praise as he continues his career progression.

“I enjoy the GA Cup tournaments a lot,” he added. “I think they’re a great stepping stone and a great event for players like myself to try to improve and continue to play games and try to get myself to the next level.

“The level of the games is really professional. It’s a very well-organized event and I think it’s very helpful for my development.

“Each and every year, players get stronger and there’s more and more competition. As the Union Academy gets bigger, more players want to be involved in that and that pushes our guys to play harder and to be more consistent too.

“This is a very big accomplishment for our team and we'll do everything we can to bring home the cup."

Philadelphia Union U-17 vs. Toronto FC U-17 kicks off this afternoon at 3 p.m. ET.
