In a very short time, Philadelphia Union supporters have earned praise throughout Major League Soccer for inspirational commitment to their club. That dedication has been especially apparent when challenged to make an impact, whether it be Pepsi Refresh Contest voting, Goal/Save of the Week voting, World Cup Bid City petition signing, Hispanic Choice Awards voting, donating blood to the American Red Cross, donating school supplies, or a number of other causes.
Plain and simply, when Union supporters are called upon, they answer the bell.
If early indications or past experiences are to be believed (we think they are), the in-progress 'Coats for Chester' drive is setting up to be another enormous success.
Working in conjunction with the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Hall of Fame, the Union reached out to supporters just a couple days prior to Saturday's match vs Houston. The response was immediate and encouraging, to the tune of nearly 200 coats collected at the gates.
Union fans who will be attendance for either of the club's two remaining home matches are encouraged to bring new and slightly used coats to PPL Park. Deposit boxes will be situated at all three major entrances (PPL EnergyPlus gate, Crozer-Premier gate and Supporters gate) on October 7 vs LA and October 16 vs NY.
Philadelphia Union are proud to support the SEPA Soccer Hall of Fame in this charitable endeavor, along with the Sons of Ben, Coldwell Banker and Read's Atlas Van Lines. Once all coats are collected, they will be distributed to those in need via the City of Chester's Operation Warm, St. Bernardine's Center, St. Katherine Drexel's Food Pantry and the Chester Upland School District.
If you have any coats that would be better served keeping someone warm this winter than sitting in your closet, bring them along to one of our next two matches.
Together, as Union supporters have shown time and time again, we can make a difference.
