The Sons of Ben are set to be in fine voice once again this Saturday when an estimated 100 diehard fans make the long trip up to Stade Saputo in Montreal.
The dedicated army of supporters will see Philadelphia Union visit the Impact just 21 days after dramatically defeating the Canadian side 2-1 on home soil when captain and All-Star Carlos Valdés steered home a superb last-minute winner to give John Hackworth’s side all three points.
And the Philadelphia Union support could be set to break the record for traveling fans at Stade Saputo – while also setting a new Sons of Ben record for a road game in Canada.
With the Impact’s first five league games of their expansion season taking place at the Olympic Stadium earlier in 2012, the Union’s away contingent is likely to surpass the total of 80 fans who have previously made the journey to the recently-built arena to follow Seattle Sounders and New York Red Bulls respectively.
The Sons of Ben record in Canada is also set to be smashed, with 35 – the number that made the 1,004 mile round-trip to Toronto in 2011 – set to be almost trebled at the weekend.
Their overall record stands at a phenomenal 1,200 for the trip to New York Red Bulls in 2011, while 300 made the journey to DC United’s RFK Stadium in the same year.
Speaking to Philadelphiaunion.com ahead of the 942-mile round trip, Kelly Delaney, Sons of Ben travel coordinator, said: “There will be almost 100 Sons of Ben traveling to Montreal this weekend. While we have traveled in much larger numbers to away games in the past two years, I'm extremely impressed with Union fans, particularly the Sons of Ben, in their dedication to the team with their willingness to travel across the country or into another country to support the boys in blue.
“I can only hope when making the eight hours-plus trip home that we are bringing three points back with us!”
