Philadelphia Union are recognizing fans throughout the month of October with The U Thank U, dedicating the month to the fans who make PPL Park one of the most passionate and vibrant stadiums in Major League Soccer.
Items up for grabs throughout the month range from official 2012 MLS All-Star game merchandise and authentic Philadelphia Union team items – including jerseys, training wear and signed soccer balls, to limited edition giveaway items from the 2012 season and international merchandise, featuring a special autographed match ball by English Premier League side Everton FC and a commemorative Union jersey worn in the midseason victory over German Bundesliga giants Schalke 04.
The club will mark The U Thank U fan appreciation month throughout its final two home games against New England Revolution, presented by Toyota, on Saturday Oct. 6 (7 p.m. Comcast SportsNet and 610WIP) and New York Red Bulls, presented by Bimbo, on the final day of the season, Saturday, Oct. 27 (1:30 p.m. live on NBC and 610WIP).
The first 10,000 supporters arriving for the match with the Revolution this Saturday, Oct. 6 will receive a Union scarf, courtesy of Toyota plus a print for all fans from Comcast SportsNet on the way out to mark the network’s 15th anniversary. Game time is 7 p.m. and will air on Comcast SportsNet.
The first 5,000 arriving for the rivalry match with New York will receive a 2012 Union team print sponsored by Bimbo featuring the entire squad and technical staff.
The appreciation month will work alongside the club’s recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with players sporting pink laces and patches and special pink items available at the Union Shop at PPL Park starting with New England’s visit. On Oct. 6, there will be a special halftime ceremony with FORCE (Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered),
There will also be with special promotions across the club’s social media platforms and "The 90th Minute" radio shows on SportsRadio 610 WIP on Oct. 2, Oct. 16 and Oct. 23.
“A club is nothing without its supporters and we are privileged and immensely grateful to have such incredible fans as part of the family at the Philadelphia Union,” said Sakiewicz. “They have turned out in great numbers, home and away, and have been sensational again in a season which has had its ups and downs. So, we want to dedicate the final month of the regular season – when every player and member of staff will be focused on ensuring we finish as strongly as possible and, very importantly, working tirelessly to improve on and off the field in 2013."
As part of The U Thank U, the Union will be recognizing the "Fans Fan of the Year" as voted for by the fans, with 11 finalists receiving a Union merchandise package before a grand prize winner receives a sensational 2013 Philadelphia Union Pre-season fan package to Orlando, Florida, that includes airfare, hotel accommodation and VIP fan experiences with the team.
Nominations, detailing in 200 words or less why you, a family member or friend embodies the core values of Philadelphia Union and should be the "Fans Fan of the Year", should to be submitted via firstname.lastname@example.org by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday October 17, 2012, with a final round of voting beginning on October 19.
Grand prize winner will be announced at the Oct. 27 match against the New York Red Bulls.
Team Manager John Hackworth added: “This club’s bond with its fans is what truly sets it apart and I’m very proud – as are the players and technical staff – to be a part of that special relationship. The passion and energy that they show at PPL Park and on the road continues to be a huge influence in our locker room so we’re delighted to give 'The U Thank U' our full support.”
Supporters purchasing four tickets for family and friends for either of the Union’s remaining fixture can secure four sideline seats and four mini soccer balls for just $165 – as well as the opportunity to also get their hands on exclusive pieces of team history.
In addition, the ‘U’ will have a presence at Comcast SportsNet’s 15th Anniversary event at Xfinity Live on Sunday, Oct. 21 as another season and another chapter in the club’s burgeoning story opens into another in 2013.
