Steel FC knocks off Villanova in preseason scrimmage

Zach Zandi sets up opener against alma mater in win

Bethlehem Steel FC knocked off Villanova University -- offseason signing Zach Zandi’s alma mater – with two first half goals in the club’s fifth preseason match of 2019. ‘Nova pulled one back as part of an early exchange of goals, but Steel FC controlled the match in a deserved win.

Zandi set up the first with a cutting pass to Faris early on. The big striker then turned provider by creating a deep turnover and laying in captain James Chambers in the 18th minute.

The Wildcats returned fire four minutes later before the match settled into a tense, gritty affair with both sides flying into tackles. Attacking play was focused on the flanks, and the goalies on both sides had to be alert as crosses poured into their boxes.

As Steel FC and Villanova continued to play at a fast pace, Zandi stood out as he popped up in pockets of space and sought to exploit gaps in the Wildcats defense. Without an insurance goal, however, Brendan Burke’s side had to fend off a series of late corners as ‘Nova pushed for an equalizer.

Bethlehem Steel returns to action in a closed-door scrimmage next week when they take on new DC United affiliate and fellow USL Championship side Loudoun United on Wednesday, February 20.
