Bethlehem Steel FC 1, Loudoun United FC 2 | 2019 Preseason Scrimmage Recap
Steel FC trialist pulls one back late in tough loss
Bethlehem Steel FC played its sixth match of the 2019 preseason this afternoon, scrimmaging against Loudoun United FC of the USL Championship on Thursday, February 21. Steel FC fell 2-1 in tough USL Championship preseason matchup.
The match started off with both squads making early runs and applying pressure on the other’s defensive line. Steel FC looked to take the early lead with a shot that went off the crossbar. Loudoun sought to relieve pressure but the visitors maintained possession and continued making dangerous runs into the box. Despite Steel FC’s dominance, it was Loudoun United that struck first, rippling the net just before half with a 41st-minute goal.
Loudoun picked up where they left off when the second half began, and they broke through Steel FC’s defense in the 61st minute. With a half still to play, Steel FC wasn’t out of the fight yet and continued fighting to get back into the match. By pressing deep and early against Loudoun’s defense, Brendan Burke’s squad caused trouble and confusion across the backline. In the first minute of extra time, a trialist buried the ball in the back of the net, leaving Bethlehem one goal down with too little time to draw even.
Bethlehem Steel FC plays next in a closed-door scrimmage against Richmond Kickers of USL League One on Friday, February 22.
