Bethlehem Steel FC played its seventh match of the 2019 preseason on Friday afternoon, falling 3-0 to a strong Richmond Kickers side.
The match started out with a majority of the plays taking place in the middle-third of the field as both sides struggled to retain possession. Richmond played out wide as much as possible and forced the outside backs of Steel FC into early running. Dangerous crosses across the box meant goalkeeper Tomás Romero was called on to make some excellent saves in the first half, forcing shots both wide and over the crossbar and keeping his side level in the match.
The barrage of early crosses from Richmond would eventually pay off in the 31st minute, when a rebound was picked up and buried in the back of the net. Down 0-1 after the first half, Steel FC picked up the intensity of their press in the second half, tiring the Richmond defense and breaking their backline early with a shot that was pushed wide by the Kickers’ goalkeeper. Richmond increased their lead with a 58th-minute goal which stemmed the Steel attack for a few moments.
Feeding off the fresh legs and energy brought on by trialists coming in as subs, Steel FC continued the press and tested the Kickers’ goalkeeper late in an effort to climb back into the match. As the match wound down, a Richmond attacker was brought down in the box for a penalty kick. That conversion effectively ended any hopes of a comeback and the match finished 3-0.
Bethlehem Steel FC plays next in a closed-door scrimmage against Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Championship on Saturday, February 24.
