Philadelphia Union Academy teams have continued their winning ways in Frisco, Texas, at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs. The U16 and U18 squads are each one win away from the knockout round with their final group stage games coming today. The U14 team played in the USSDA Showcase, suffering only their second defeat of the calendar year at the hands of Sockers FC before topping Chicago Fire Academy and Portland Timbers Academy.
The U14s had no trouble finding the back of the net over the final three games of their season, scoring eight goals at the Showcase including this Cole Turner “golazo” on a free kick.
Today the U16s face third-seeded Vancouver Whitecaps Academy this afternoon with a knockout-round berth on the line. With a win and favorable outcome in the Kendall SC-Real Salt Lake AZ match (Union and RSL AZ are tied atop the group), the team will advance out of one of the tougher groups at the playoffs.
The U18s face Kendall SC and only need a draw to secure their group win. They have earned six points in their first two games with a pair of 2-0 wins, including one over defending champion Chicago Fire. Alex Soto would not be outdone by Turner’s incredible free kick and added a highlight reel set piece goal of his own.
