2017 Steel FC Look Back: Santi Moar

From the first moments that Santi Moar stepped onto the field for Bethlehem Steel FC in his rookie campaign, #MoarGoals captured the minds of the club’s growing fan base. Moar backed up the expectations by becoming the club’s first finalist for a United Soccer League end of the year award, where he finished runner-up for the Rookie of the Year.

A fourth-round selection by Steel FC’s MLS-affiliate the Philadelphia Union in the 2017 SuperDraft, Moar inked his first professional contract in January. In the club’s first preseason match against Junior Lone Star FC, Moar produced the first showing of #MoarGoals, netting a first-half brace to propel the club to a 7-0 victory.

After leading the club in the preseason with three goals in five matches, Moar earned his first professional start in the Steel FC season-opener. The Coruna, Spain native turned in 60 minutes in his debut and fired his first shot as a pro. The following week, Moar added another item to his checklist, finding Seku Conneh for an insurance goal in Steel FC’s first victory of the season against FC Cincinnati. One week later #MoarGoals struck the back of the net for the first time officially, striking his first professional goal on the road at rival Harrisburg City Islanders.

As the season changed to summer and the temperatures increased, Moar aided Steel FC to it’s  longest winning in its young history. During the summer’s six-match unbeaten streak that saw the team defeat New York Red Bulls II twice, Moar delivered in both with anastounding goal on the road while recording an assist in the Goodman Stadium win.

With playoff a run looming, Moar continued to contribute with goals at Ottawa Fury FC and Louisville City FC. #MoarGoals wasn’t limited to just Moar as he involved his teammates with assists in a pair of matches against Pittsburgh.

Needing a result to propel the club into the postseason, Moar turned in his best performance on the road at Toronto FC II. Collecting a club record five points in the win, the 23-year-old scorched the back of the net with a pair of goals in three minutes for the fastest brace in club history. Moar finished off his night with a Steel FC rookie record sixth assist as he found Seku Conneh for the insurance goal.

Overall, Moar concluded his rookie campaign with more than just #MoarGoals. The winger led the squad with 30 appearances and played over 1,800 minutes. With a shortened turnaround from college, Moar fired in six goals and six assists in 2017 and more can be expected as the calendar turns to 2018.
