This past Saturday, Philadelphia Union opened their 2018 campaign with a 2-0 win over New England Revolution at Talen Energy Stadium. In the match, there were several key achievements unlocked and many first starts for the young squad.
Homegrown midfielder Anthony Fontana earned his first MLS regular-season debut, appearing in the Starting XI and notched his first career goal in the 43rd minute of play.
Homegrown defender Auston Trusty also made his debut in the starting lineup. Trusty came up big for Philadelphia on the defensive side of the ball and was able to keep New England off the board with a bold tackle in the box to preserve the shutout.
Derrick Jones then wrapped up the trifecta of Homegrown talent with an appearance late in the match, coming on as a sub and helping keep the shutout intact for Philadelphia.
This was the first time in club history three players who completed the Path to the Pros appeared in a match for the First Team.
Joining that group of players who earned minutes in the Home Opener is forward Cory Burke. The Jamaican international subbed on for Philadelphia and made an immediate impact on the match with his speed and aggressiveness on the ball. Burke was able to earn an assist tonight after putting pressure on the Revs defense inside the 18.
Amongst the players who have unlocked achievements in the first matchup of the season are midfielder David Accam, forward CJ Sapong and goalkeeper Andre Blake.
Accam made his first start with the Union this past Saturday, immediately threatening the Revs backline in his 85 minutes on the pitch with four shots and suffering two fouls.
Sapong, who also created several chances around the net was able to deliver the team's second goal of the night in the 69th minute — securing Philadelphia's 2-0 victory.
Blake, who denied three major shots from the Revs, earned his first clean sheet of the 2018 season. With the shutout, Blake has gone 414 consecutive minutes without giving up a goal to the Revs and has allowed just two goals all-time against New England in his six career appearances.
The Boys in Blue will return to action next Saturday, March 17 when they face off against Columbus Crew SC.
