Mwanga to Retain GA Status

Union striker Danny Mwanga will retain his Generation adidas status in 2011, Coach John Hackworth revealed Monday evening on KYW's Philly Soccer Show podcast. Mwanga's status was previously uncertain after registering 1,461 minutes played in 2010.

Fellow first round picks Amobi Okugo and Jack McInerney will also retain their GA status, as expected, meaning the three will not need to be protected in the MLS Expansion Draft on November 24. The Union will submit a list of 11 protected players by 2:00pm on November 22. As anticipated, Chris Seitz graduated from the Generation adidas program.

As a result of Major League Soccer's decision on Mwanga, the 19-year-old forward won’t count towards the club's $2.68 million cap in 2011 (reflecting a five percent increase from the $2.55 million cap in 2010, as per the most recent CBA).
