River Cup 2011

River Cup 2012

Chester, Pa. – Philadelphia Union and The Philadelphia Union Foundation will hold their second annual River Cup at PPL Park on Sunday at 6pm.

The one of a kind event features the Union front office and technical staff against the Union supporters group, the Sons of Ben, in a spirited match on the pitch at PPL Park.  Philadelphia Union players and the Wives and Friends of the Philadelphia Union will also be in attendance as the club aims to raise money for the Philadelphia Union Foundation.  Last year’s River Cup raised an excess of $20,000.

“River Cup is a fantastic opportunity for us to get out of our suits and into kits to play with the best supporters in the world,” said Philadelphia Union CEO & Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz.  “Their spirit is second-to-none and they bring that out of the stands and onto the pitch. The pressure is on us to defend our title, which we fully plan on doing. Of course, most importantly, we’re able to raise some money for the Foundation and move along in our goal to help change a generation of children.”

Tickets are on sale now for $10 and are available for purchase from the PPL Park box office during all Union home games, as well as regular business hours on non-gamedays.  Donations can also be made through the Union’s website by visiting www.philadelphiaunion.com/foundation.

The Philadelphia Union Foundation provides opportunities for children through the power of relationships to offer transformational change in the areas of education, community, health and recreation.  100% of the net proceeds of The River Cup will go towards these foundation building blocks.

The Union front office hope to make it two wins in a row after a narrow 2-1 victory last season, while the Sons of Ben are out for revenge as they look to lift the River Cup trophy for the first time.

“Last year’s match, left myself and all of my teammates lifelong memories,” said Sons of Ben captain Corey Furlan.  “We are looking to help out the Union Foundation by raising as much money as possible but we have also assembled a team that is coming to this match for one reason and one reason only…to lift the trophy.  This year is ours!!”

The game will also feature children from Chester City United as player escorts and ball kids and the club will play a mini-game at halftime.

The Philadelphia Union Shop will be open to the public and a portion of the proceeds will be going to the Philadelphia Union Foundation.

The Sons of Ben will also be selling special River Cup merchandise.
