Ken Tribbett scores first goal in Union victory over Tampa Bay Rowdies

Philadelphia Union won their second match in the Suncoast Invitational Saturday night against hosts Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Defender Ken Tribbett opened the scoring with a header from Ilsinho’s corner in the 17th minute. Tribbett made strong contact with the perfectly placed corner from the former Brazilian national team member cross. Although the Rowdies’ defense tried to block the shot, the ball crossed the line to give the Union the lead.

The Union got another goal in the 29th minute when Leo Fernandes found the back of the net from Ilsinho’s second assist of the night.

Matt Jones, making his first start in goal for the Union in the Suncoast Invitational Tournament, kept a shutout despite the Rowdies’ best attempts on goal. In the 63rd minute, trialist Konstontine Mollinger took a shot from just outside the six yard box, but Jones made the keep the score 2-0.

Tribbett, along with No. 3 SuperDraft pick Keegan Rosenberry, has started the past three games for the Union. Accompanying them in the defense were Fabinho and Anderson (Richie Marquez 72’)

In midfield, Vincent Nogueira, Brian Carroll ©; Chris Pontius (Walter Restrepo 61'), Ilsinho (Sebastien Le Toux 72’) and Fernandes passed and spread the field of play.

Up top, C.J. Sapong started but was later replaced by Fabian Herbers in the 72nd minute.

The Union will play their third game in the preseason tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. against New York Red Bulls at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex.
