Earn Your Spot
Entering the final phase of the preseason, the Union’s final roster has yet to be decided. Curtin is still evaluating players and is working with the technical staff to lock down a third goaltender in time to let him acclimate to the team. Overall, Curtin said there are about three roster spots up for grabs before the roster is finalized.
“There’s three open roster spots, one of those spots I’m already counting for the goalkeeper,” Curtin said. “So two field player roster spots are open, and of those two field player spots, one is in the supplemental spot and one is in the spot to be loaned for the year to Bethlehem Steel.”
Curtin’s conference call came on the heels of the Union announcing the trade and signing of Adam Najem from the New York Red Bulls. Najem, a homegrown player for RBNY, came to the Union for Philadelphia’s natural second round pick. Curtin had high praise for the recent Akron grad, believing him signing was just like a first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft.
“I believe he would have gone in the top five of this year’s draft,” Curtin said of Najem. “He’s an intelligent, humble, quiet kid. But when you get him on the field, I would say he makes a lot of noise, especially around the goal. He has that skill set you can’t really teach or coach.”
