Pontius vs. Orlando City SC

Takeaways from Union's 2-1 loss to Orlando City, presented by Xfinity

CJ Strikes Again

For the second time in two games, CJ Sapong made a mark on the score sheet. With the Union trailing 1-0, Fabian Herbers made a run down the right side of the pitch and put a cross into the box. His pass was redirected by Alejandro Bedoya to Sapong, who headed it past Orlando City keeper Joe Bendik to tie the game at one.

With his goal, Sapong brings his total to 18 in a Union kit. It also marks the first time since September 2015 Sapong has scored in back-to-back games. He finished the game with one goal on two shots.

Ilsinho off the bench

In the 61st minute, Ilsinho entered the game for his first appearance of 2017, after battling a hamstring injury during the first two weeks. He entered the game for Herbers and took his spot on the right side of the pitch. Ilsinho had 13 touches in his 29 minutes of play, including one of the Union’s best scoring chances. Ilsinho ripped a shot from inside the box, which clanked off the left post before bouncing away from the net. While he wasn’t able to put the ball home, his appearance showed the Union have two quality players available on the right wing game in and game out.

Fafa aka The Flash

With his last substitution in the game, Head Coach Jim Curtin put Fafa into the game in the 86th minute for his third straight appearance. In relief for Chirs Pontius, Fafa showed his speed early and often. Late into stoppage time, Fafa blew past Orlando City players to lead the Union’s last scoring chance of the game. He brings an element to the Union’s late game strategy that will prove difficult for opponents, and it was on display tonight in Orlando.
