Chris Nanco Picks Up USL Team of the Week Honors
Canadian midfielder picks up second league accolade after sparking Steel FC comeback against New York
BETHLEHEM, Pa. (June 26, 2018) – After leading Bethlehem Steel FC to a comeback against rivals New York Red Bulls II, midfielder Chris Nanco has earned USL Team of the Week honors for Week 15.
The 23-year-old was called upon late in the first half as the club’s first substitute and rallied Steel FC from a two-goal deficit with two assists in the final six minutes to push the club’s unbeaten streak to four. Nanco stared the comeback in the 88th minute, delivering a perfectly placed corner kick volley into the six-yard-box where defender Matt Mahoney headed in his first professional goal.
With the referee on the verge of blowing his whistle, Nanco collected a poorly cleared ball and flung in a low cross that bounced to the far post and an unmarked James Chambers for the tying goal.
The two-assist contest from Nanco was the first multi-assist match of his career and doubled his assist total from two to four. He also became the fourth player in Steel FC history to collect multiple assists in a match but the quickest to do so. The league honor is the second of Nanco’s career, joining fellow midfielder Santi Moar as the only players in the club history with multiple league accolades.
Nanco and the rest of Bethlehem Steel FC return to action tonight for a friendly against Reading United A.C. at John Gurski Stadium at 7 p.m. as part of the 2018 Philadelphia Union Festival. The friendly is in preparation for the club’s next league match against the Charlotte Independence on Saturday, June 30. Kick off from Goodman Stadium on the campus of Lehigh University is scheduled for 5 p.m. and will be broadcast locally on Service Electric and streamed online on ESPN+.
