Alberg sores again

For the second time in three games, Roland Alberg found the back of the net. In the 18th minute of the match, Keegan Rosenberry sent a cross into the box, and Atlanta United FC attempted to clear the pass. The failed clear sent the ball to Giliano Wijnaldum, who chipped the ball over the back line, right to Alberg's feet. With Brad Guzan charging, Alberg poked the ball into the back of the net to give the Union a 1-0 lead. Alberg's goal was his sixth of the season, the second-most on the team this season. His goal was also the 15th goal of his career with the Union, second-most on the active roster behind CJ Sapong. Alberg later added an assist on Alejandro Bedoya's goal in the 22nd minute, making tonight's game his first game since August 27, 2016 where he registered a goal and assist in the same match.

Just five minutes after Alberg's goal, Alejandro Bedoya doubled the Union's lead. Haris Medunjanin served in a corner kick from the left side, going short side to Jack Elliott. Elliott deflected the pass to the far side of the box, where Bedoya was waiting. Bedoya biked the kick on net, past Guzan for the Union's second goal of the match. It was his first goal of the 2017 season, as well as his first goal at Talen Energy Stadium. Bedoya's play was also exceptional defensively, making key blocks, including two in a span of thirty seconds late in the first half. Bedoya finished the match with one goal on four shots, seven recoveries, two blocks, one tackle and one clearance.

Two Union rookies registered their first assists on each of the Union's goals tonight. Giliano Wijnaldum's chip to Roland Alberg marked his first assist since joining the Union, and Jack Elliott registered his first assist on Bedoya's goal. Both assists were the primary assists on the goal. For Elliott, it was his second point in as many games, just strengthening his case for Rookie of the Year. Wijnaldum's assist comes on the heels after being out of the starting XI against Toronto FC. Alberg registered the secondary assist on Bedoya's goal, which was his first assist of the 2017 season.
