Union head into New York with historic offensive performances

The Union travel up to New Jersey to take on New York Red Bulls on national television Sunday afternoon, with kick-off at 1:00 p.m. Heading into the match, the Union have a deceptively potent attack, made possible by a few players.

The first of those players is CJ Sapong, who is having a career year. Sapong heads into the match with 13 goals, leading the team by more than half. His 13 goals are a career high, and is just one shy from tying the Union's single season goal record. Obviously, he's having a good stretch this season, but it's also one of the best in MLS.

Sapong has made his case for being one of the best goal scorers in MLS this season, and the stats show it. Sapong's 13 goals are tied with Jozy Altidore for the most among all American-born players. Also, Sapong's shot conversion rate is the second-best in MLS among players with more than 10 shots.

Another one of the major keys for the Union offensively is Roland Alberg. Alberg is second on the Union with six goals, and his goals per 90 minutes is the best in Union history for any player with more than five goals. In 2017, his goals per 90 minutes is higher than his career average, and ranks tops on the team.

Since Alberg joined the Union in 2016, he has scored 15 goals, which is tied for second for the most goals by players entering MLS that season. However, he has played less than half of the minutes of the other top goal scorers in that category.

Fafa Picault has also made an impact on the Union since joining the team this season. He's third in the team in goals, but is tied for the most road goals on the season with three. Tied with him is none other than Sapong. He has also chipped in with a road assist, and his four road points are tied for the most on the team, along with Sapong.

All three players will be critical for the Union heading into the match against New York Red Bulls. If these three players continue to produce as they have this season, and in their Union careers, the Boys in Blue will have a good chance to come home with three points.
