The Union put on a show for the final game of the 2017 season, with the stars being Ilsinho, Fafa Picault and CJ Sapong. And all three of them were named to the MLS Team of the Week.
Sapong's day was highlighted by his third multi-goal game of the season, where he also broke the Union's single season goal record. In the 26th minute, Picault and Sapong broke into the final third on a two-on-one. Picault, inside the box, sent a cross over to Sapong, where he had a wide-open net. He buried the shot for his 15th goal of the season, surpassing Sebastien Le Toux's record of 14 goals in a single season. Sapong's 16th came in the 74th minute, when he slammed home a shot off a rebound from Orlando City SC keeper Earl Edwards Jr., giving the Union a 6-1 lead. Sapong's 13 goals at home set a new team record for home goals in a season along with his single-season goal record.
Ilsinho was the one who originally got the Union the board though, as his first goal came just three minutes into the match. Ilsinho opened the scoring with a blistering shot off a great cross from Alejandro Bedoya to give the Union a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later, Ilsinho added an assist, as he hit Picault on a cross to give the Union a 2-0 lead. Ilsinho registered his brace in the 64th minute, when Haris Medunjanin sent a gorgeous long ball for him to run on, and he didn't squander the chance, putting his shot into the back of the net to extend the Union's lead to 5-0. Ilsinho's two goals an assist is his third multi-point night of the 2017 season, extending his career high in goals to six and assists to five.
Picault also notched a three-point game with a pair of goals and an assist as well. Picault extended the Union's lead to 2-0 in the sixth minute of the match when Ilsinho sent a pass into the middle of the box. Picault beat his man in the air and headed home the pass for his first goal of the night. Later in the first half, Picault and Sapong ran into the box, and Picault slipped a pass to Sapong, where he scored his 15th goal of the season. But Picault's night was highlighted by the team's fourth goal and his second of the night. Picault ran onto an errant header by an Orlando City SC defender and put his shot between Edwards Jr.'s legs. Picault was subbed off at halftime for Chris Pontius, but not before registering his first multi-goal game and tying Roland Alberg for second most goals on the team.
Sapong finds himself on the MLS Team of the Week for the fourth time this season, tying Andre Blake for the team high. Ilsinho's nomination was his second, and it was Picault's first time on the Team of the Week.
