Philadelphia Union put the finishing touches on their 2017 season at home with a stellar 6-1 win over Orlando City SC the last time the two clubs met. With both team's out of the playoff picture last year, the Decision Day matchup was a record setter for the Union, as three players added two goals each to the scoreboard.
Ilsinho opened scoring in the third minute with a shot from outside the box to the bottom right corner of the net. Three minutes later, he registered an assist with a cross into the box to
Fafa Picault, who then sent a header to the back of the net. Union forward CJ Sapong also capped his season with two goals during the match, earning himself a career-high of 16 goals and breaking the team’s single-season scoring record. In the 26th minute, Picault hit a cross from inside the box to Sapong, who rocketed a close-range shot into the center of the goal net.
Picault then notched the club’s 4-0 lead before halftime in the 38th minute with a left-footed shot, rolling right between Orlando goalkeeper Earl Edward Jr.’s legs. It was the most goals scored by the Union in a single half.
The Boys in Blue continued to dominate in their battle against the Lions in the second half of the match. Haris Medunjanin’s through ball in the 63rd minute gave Ilsinho his hard-earned brace, setting his sixth goal and third multi-point match of the season.
Orlando City’s Dom Dwyer was able to add one goal for Orlando with a header in the 74th minute. But two minutes later, Sapong secured the Union’s win with his second goal of the match, adding his 13th goal scored at home during the season.
Fans can catch the Union as they face off against Orlando in their first meeting of the 2018 season this Friday, with kick off slated for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
