Continental FC is a Greater Philadelphia youth soccer club with a proud history and important role in the Philadelphia soccer landscape, and the distinction of having players attending Union Academy partner school YSC Academy.
This summer, Continental has the opportunity to represent Philadelphia on an international scale as their Dortmund U9’s took on teams from around the world at the IberCup in Portugal. They earned their place in the prestigious tournament earlier this spring in the Dallas qualifiers, where they put a cap on the first round of the tournament with a hard-fought victory over local competitors in penalty kicks.
Dortmund then moved on to dominate the group rounds upon arriving in Portugal, with wins over teams from France, Singapore, and the host nation. In the championship match the U9’s faced off against the Portuguese club CF Os Belenenses, who they had already defeated once in pool play. After working their way through opposite sides of the bracket, history repeat itself and the Continental boys put up a decisive 3-0 victory.
All 12 players who raised the IberCup in Portugal will be joining the innovative new Philadelphia Union Pre-Academy in the Fall to take the next step in their soccer development. They will make this transition with their coaches and 24 additional Continental FC teammates.
Scott Spangler, the team’s head coach, said that these boys are “extraordinary to be able to apply technique and tactics at such a high level, not really seen at the U9 level.”
With the expertise of the coaches who helped them to victory in the IberCup, and the Union Academy coaching staff on their side, one can only imagine what is in store as these players mature.
