Union Academy displays talent in Winter Showcase

Philadelphia Union Academy U17s and U19s traveled to Tampa this past week to participate in the annual U.S. Soccer Development Academy Winter Showcase, one of the premier events annually on the Academy’s calendar.

The Union Academy teams both drew three highly competitive opponents, which, along with the heat and congested schedule, promised a unique challenge for the Union prospects.

The style and quality of play that has been displayed this year across all age groups again featured for the Union Academy, as each team went undefeated and took seven points from their three matches. As impressive as the results were, it was the imposition of the Union’s style of play across these games that most impressed.

"I always encourage the players to enjoy the experience and perform well, as the results can be an imposter," said Academy Director Tommy Wilson. "It’s more about playing well and representing the club well in our style of play, and both teams did that. I’ve been spending a lot of time with Earnie and Jim talking about our club’s style of play, and I think you’d see that in the way our teams played in Florida."

Wednesday, the Union will take a look at the U17s' tournament, and Thursday will feature the U19s. The Development Academy Winter Showcase series will wrap-up Friday.
