Maurice Edu originally joined the Union prior to the 2014 season. After signing a multi-year extension in 2015, the defensive midfielder will enter his third year with the club in 2016 as the undisputed leader of the team. He has experience in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Europa League and was a former No. 1 overall selection in the MLS SuperDraft.
2015 (Union): Edu made 22 appearances and had one goal and one assist. He underwent successful season-ending surgery for a sports hernia on Oct. 15. He was shut-down midway through the year in league play, but rehabbed and played through pain in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final against Sporting Kansas City.
2014 (Union): Edu officially joined the team on loan from Stoke City on Jan. 27. In his first year back in MLS, he appeared and started in 31 games, while scoring three goals and adding two assists in 2,789 minutes. He had an assist in his Union debut during the season opener against Portland on March 8. It led to him being named to MLS Team of the Week by MLSSoccer.com. Edu was also named to the team two other times during the regular season in Week 2 and 26. He scored his first career Union goal on April 5 against Chicago, and then scored again in the following game against Real Salt Lake on April 12. Known for making big plays in key games, Edu scored the lone Union goal in the U.S. Open Cup final against Seattle Sounders at PPL Park on Sept. 16, giving the Union a temporary lead.
2012-13 (Stoke City and Bursapor): Transferred to Stoke City in August of 2012…Appeared in one game against Liverpool. Moved on loan to Bursaspor in January and appeared in 11 league games.
2011-12 (Rangers): Was second on the team with 36 league appearances. He scored three goals and helped lead Rangers to a second place finish. He also made two appearances in UEFA Champions League and two more in Europa League.
2010-11 (Rangers): Appeared in 33 league matches, scored two goals and helped lead Rangers to another Scottish Premier League title. Also scored a goal in UEFA Champions League in a 1-1 draw against Valencia on Oct. 20.
2009-10 (Rangers): Made 15 league appearances and scored a 93rd minute game-winner against archrival Celtic in a 1-0 win on Feb. 28.
2008-09 (Rangers): Joined the Scottish Premier League and appeared in 13 out of 28 games due to a torn knee ligament. His first appearance was against Kilmarnock.
2008 (Toronto FC): Made 13 appearances with 12 starts before transferring to historic Rangers FC.
2007 (Toronto FC): Joined Toronto FC as the No.1 overall pick in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. Joined as a generation Adidas player. Edu scored his first goal against Kansas City Wizards. Edu made 25 appearances and scored four goals in his rookie season.
2006: MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2006, as well as a first team NSCAA All-American.
2005: All-ACC second team selection as sophomore at Maryland, scored three goals and five assists for 11 points on the year…Edu played a major role in the success of Maryland's NCAA College Cup National Championship.
2004: Joined the Maryland Terrapins…played in 12 games while starting six. Scored 2 goals and posted 2 assists for the Terps.
Edu has appeared in 46 games for the United States National Team and has scored one goal. He was a member of the 2010 World Cup team that advanced to the knockout round. There, he famously had a goal disallowed during a match in group play against Slovenia. He was also included in the 2008 Summer Olympics and played three games as center back.
Signed a multi-year deal with Philadelphia Union on Jan. 14, 2015. Was originally acquired via loan from Stoke City FC on Jan. 27, 2014.
