Chester, Pa. (November 22, 2010) – Philadelphia Union announced today the acquisition of midfielder Brian Carroll from the Columbus Crew in exchange for a conditional second round pick in the 2011 Major League Soccer SuperDraft and allocation money. Per MLS and club policy, terms of the trade were not disclosed.
The 29-year old began his professional career in D.C. United after he was picked in the second round of the 2003 SuperDraft (11th overall). While with the Red-and-Black, Carroll was an active member of Nowak’s 2004 MLS Cup champion team where he remained until being selected by San Jose Earthquakes in the 2007 Expansion Draft. Five days later, the defender was traded to the Columbus Crew for Kei Kamara.
Raised in Springfield, Virginia, Carroll owns the second-longest consecutive games played streak in MLS history with 90 (ended on 9/23/06). The defensive midfielder has won two MLS Cups titles (D.C. United 2004 and Columbus Crew 2008) and four Supporters’ Shields (D.C. United 2006, 2007 and Columbus Crew 2008, 2009). Carroll has been capped with the senior U.S. Men's National Team eight times, most recently starting and playing 90 minutes in a 1-0 win over South Africa in the Nelson Mandela Challenge on November 17, 2010.
