Chester, Pa. (January 14, 2011) - Philadelphia Union announced today that the club will not pick up Finnish midfielder Toni Stahl's contract option. The UConn graduate joined the Union via last year’s MLS SuperDraft as a second round selection, #17 overall.
Stahl made his professional debut in Philadelphia's inaugural game at Seattle Sounders FC on March 25, 2010, logging a total of 41 minutes before being sent off for receiving a second yellow card. The 25-year old also played in a US Open Cup match against the New York Red Bulls and in international friendlies against Scottish Premier League side Celtic FC, English Premier League side Manchester United and Mexican First Division side Chivas de Guadalajara.
Stahl began his playing career in the HJK, helping the U-17 squad to national championships in 2001 and 2002. He joined UConn in 2006 and earned Big East Rookie of the Year honors that same year. The midfielder was named to the All-Big East First-Team in 2007, 2008 and 2009, and added Big East Midfielder of the Year and second-team All-American honors to his resume in 2009.
