Chester, Pa. (October 4, 2011) – Philadelphia Union forward Sebastien Le Toux has been voted Major League Soccer’s Player of the Month for September, the League announced today. Le Toux, who netted seven goals in six games, received 70 percent of the vote conducted by the North American Soccer Reporters. This is the first ever Player of the Month honor for the Frenchman, who entered MLS with the Seattle Sounders in 2009.
"It was an incredible month of September for me," said Le Toux, who was a member of the MLS Best XI in 2010 with 14 goals and 11 assists. "This award means a lot to us. My teammates and I did a great job on the field, and the work I've put in since the beginning of the season is paying off with the goals I scored. I just hope it continues further."
Le Toux regained his scoring touch in September, including two goals in a crucial 3-2 win over D.C. United last Thursday to keep the Union among the Eastern Conference leaders in a tight playoff race. He began the month with a goal against Real Salt Lake (9/3) and then led the charge against New England on 9/7, notching two goals to allow the Union to battle back from a 4-1 deficit to earn a 4-4 draw. Le Toux scored the game-winner against a hot Columbus team on September 17 and a week later netted a second half equalizer to give the Union an important road point against Kansas City.
The forward leads the Union in goals (10) and assists (8) and has played every minute of every game thus far this season.
Other players to receive first place votes from the North American Soccer Reporters panel were Osvaldo Alonso of Seattle and August's player of the month, D.C.'s Dwayne De Rosario.
The MLS Player of the Month is selected after each calendar month of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com.
