Bethlehem Steel FC win inaugural game 1-0 against FC Montreal with goal from Fabian Herbers

Bethlehem Steel FC defeated FC Montreal 1-0 in the club’s inaugural match Friday night at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

The first half saw Bethlehem Steel FC with strong attacking opportunities and Eric Ayuk proving a menace on the wing.

Steel FC saw the first good chance on goal in the 9th minute when James Chambers had a shot after a give-and-go with Leo Fernandes. The Irish international fired the ball at the Montreal goal only to hit the post.

Just before the half, Fabian Herbers gave Steel FC the lead in the 43rd minute scoring from Walter Restrepo’s assist.

Restrepo found Herbers unmarked in the Montreal box. The Union’s sixth overall draft pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft took one touch to control the ball before sending it flying past Montreal keeper David Paulmin.

John McCarthy made a few important saves to earn his first shutout of the season and the keep the 2016 expansion side in the lead.

Bethlehem Steel FC now have a record of 1-0-0 in the 2016 inaugural season. They return to action on April 3 for the home opener against FC Cincinnati at 3 p.m. at Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium.
