Philadelphia Union played Minnesota United FC on Tuesday evening at Allianz Field in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, falling in a penalty shootout after extra time . With the loss, the Union were eliminated with Minnesota United FC advancing to the Second Round. The first half remained scoreless with both sides producing attacking opportunities. Minnesota found a breakthrough in the 68th minute when D.J. Taylor found Bongokuhle Hlongwane who put the side up 1-0. In the 73rd minute, Minnesota doubled their lead when Joseph Rosales scored inside the box. The Union pulled one back minutes later in the 76th minute, when forward Julian Carranza found forward Chris Donovan who scored his first goal for the club. In stoppage time, defender Kai Wagner fired home a cross from midfielder Joaquin Torres to level the score and send the game to overtime. Minnesota found the scoresheet first in overtime, when Bongokuhle Hlongwane scored his second goal of the match to put the side up 3-2. Defender Kai Wagner's last-minute free kick goal sent the match into a penalty shootout, where Minnesota ultimately won 7-6 against the Union in a hard-fought game.
