Philadelphia Union returned to league play on Sunday night in exciting fashion, securing their fourth straight win with a 3-2 comeback over New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. The Union are the only team to have won all their matches since the World Cup.
Following the victory, Major League Soccer named forward Bruno Damiani and homegrown midfielder Cavan Sullivan to the Team of the Matchday for their performances.
Sunday’s result was the team’s second straight come-from-behind victory. On Sunday evening in the Bronx, the Union emerged from halftime down 2-0 after a pair of first half New York City penalties, but midfielder Danley Jean Jacques quickly got one back for the team in the 48th minute, opening scoring for the Boys in Blue off a free kick executed by defender Kai Wagner, then headed in the Haitian’s direction by midfielder Cavan Sullivan.
The 16-year-old Sullivan played a key role in following equalizer, drawing a defender before finding an unmarked Damiani in the box for a finish past former Union goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 69th minute.
Six minutes later, Damiani scored off an assist from Quinn Sullivan, who beat his defender then made a quick decision to pass to Damiani instead of taking a shot of his own. Damiani placed it for the game-winner, securing a brace.
With the result, Philadelphia moved up to 13th place in the East with 19 points. They now sit just five spots away from the playoff line.
The Boys in Blue continue their busy slate of matches with a midweek showdown against Inter Miami CF on Wednesday night at Subaru Park. Limited tickets remain for the Eastern Conference clash so be sure to click the image below to secure your seats.
