After helping Philadelphia Union earn a crucial road win at Nashville SC on Wednesday night, Daniel Gazdag and Jack Elliott have been selected for the MLS Team of the Matchday.
Both players had key roles in the Union's 2-0 win over the Eastern Conference opponent with Daniel Gazdag converting twice from the penalty spot at GEODIS Park. The Hungarian earned the first penalty chance after getting taken down in the box in the 39th minute and followed up a minute later with a right-footed finish into the bottom right corner.
Late in the second half Gazdag again was called upon to convert from the penalty spot, going to the opposite corner on his second attempt of the match to double the Union's lead and secure the three points. The midfielder is now a perfect 16 for 16 in MLS regular season play for his career and the brace moved him into a tie for third place in the Union's all-time scoring list with 35 career goals in only 77 appearances.
On the other side of the pitch center back Jack Elliott grabbed the headlines with key blocks in both halves as the Union secured the road shutout. Elliott was a perfect two for two in tackles and led the team with nine clearances and three interceptions. Elliott's biggest moment of the match came in the 69th minute as he made a goal line block to prevent an equalizer from the home side.
With the latest inclusion in the league's matchday honors, Philadelphia Union have had eight different players recognized in 2023: Julian Carranza (Matchday 1, 15, 17, 21), Daniel Gazdag (Matchday 1, 8, 25), Jakob Glesnes (Matchday 6), Mikeal Uhre (Matchday 9), Damion Lowe (Matchday 11), Kai Wagner (Matchday 12), Jose Martinez (Matchday 20) and Jack Elliott (Matchday 25).
