Haris Medunjanin retires from international competition

Philadelphia Union midfielder Haris Medunjanin has appeared in 60 career matches for his National Team, Bosnia-Herzegovina. On March 27, 2018 Medunjanin earned his final cap during a nil-nil draw against Senegal in an international friendly.

Medunjanin came on as a sub in the 60th minute of play and helped create chances for Bosnia-Herzegovina down the stretch of the match. After the contest, Medunjanin told a group of reporters that he was officially retiring from international competition.

For the midfielder, his time with the Bosnia-Herzegovina National Team was memorable. As previously mentioned, Medunjanin made 60 appearances, and recording nine goals. Eight of those nine goals for Medunjanin came in UEFA Euro qualifying matches or World Cup qualifiers.

During his illustrious international career, Medunjanin made two World Cup appearances. In his first World Cup match he came off the bench and squared off against world legend Lionel Messi and Argentina in 2014. Days later Medunjanin started for Bosnia-Herzegovina against Nigeria.

Medunjanin was extremely reliable for his country, as he played over 1,000 minutes in international friendlies, UEFA Euro qualifying matches and World Cup qualifiers. His last international goal was a memorable one as he scored against Belgium in a World Cup qualifier.

Medunjanin’s impact both on and off the pitch has been felt by everyone around him. Philadelphia Union Head Coach Jim Curtin praised his Bosnian midfielder in his weekly press conference with the media.

“To see how professional Haris is, I really enjoy working with him. He’s had a heck of a career internationally. He made a decision that I’m sure he’s at peace with,” Curtin said. “I don’t think people appreciate how good of a player he is. He goes under the radar because it does a lot of the little things. He has as good of a left foot as I’ve ever worked with or even played with.”

Although this chapter of Medunjanin’s career is coming to a close, the midfielder is still very much in the club picture as he is set to join Philadelphia this week in Colorado for their weekend contest against the Rapids.
