The first six matches of the 2022 Major League Soccer season have been played and Philadelphia Union continue to roll with strong defense and a unblemished record. Let's take a deeper dive into the numbers.
There is only one undefeated team left in Major League Soccer after the first six weeks of the season. It's the Boys in Blue.
The Union have claimed 16 points through their first six matches in Major League Soccer Play. Not only is that the best start in club history but it also has the Boys in Blue atop the race for the Supporters’ Shield race in April.
Philadelphia Union has scored at least one goal in each of their last 20 matches across all competition. The scoring streak is the longest in club history and dates back to September 19th, 2021 when the Union notched three goals against Orlando City SC.
Philadelphia Union are unbeaten in their last 19 matches when leading at half-time. During the current streak the club is 18-0-3 which dates back to October 4, 2020.
During the club's winning streak, Daniel Gazdag has scored in four consecutive matches which tied the longest offensive stretch in Union history, matching the spree that CJ Sapong had in 2015.
The Union have collected four straight clean sheets in 2022, the longest run in club history. Even more impressive is that the streak has seen the same defensive core play every minute with Andre Blake in goal, Nathan Harriel and Kai Wagner as outside back and the center back duo of Jakob Glesnes and Jack Elliott.
The Union's current shutout streak stands at 418 minutes, the longest stretch in club history in MLS regular season play.
The Union defense has another impressive defensive streak rolling as well, with a opponent not having scored a goal from outside the 18 for 4,172 minutes of action in MLS play. That is nearly 70 hours!
During the club's defensive streak, the combined expected goals against by San Jose, New York City FC, Charlotte FC and the Columbus Crew has been limited to just 3.78 goals according to Stats Perform.
Four different players have done the scoring for the Union to begin the season. Daniel Gazdag leads the way with four while Team Captain Alejandro Bedoya and forward Cory Burke have each added two goals apiece while Julian Carranza got his first DOOP against Charlotte FC.
Left back Kai Wagner leads the team with three assists in 2022. Wagner's third assist was also his 20th in MLS regular season play, making him the first defender in club history to hit 20 assists for his Union career.
