For the fourth time in 2023, Philadelphia Union forward Julian Carranza has been selected for the MLS Team of the Matchday.
The 23-year-old continued his amazing campaign adding a goal while playing a key role on both ends of the pitch in another as the Boys in Blue knocked off Inter Miami CF by a 4-1 margin at Subaru Park on Saturday night.
Carranza make it 2-0 in the 39th minute, taking a precision pass from Mikael Uhre and putting it into the back of the net for his first goal against his former club. The goal gives the Argentine forward 10 in regular season action, becoming only the second player in Union history to multiple 10 goal seasons alongside Union Ring of Honoree Sebastien Le Toux.
In the second half, Carranza played a key role in the Union's final goal of the evening. Carranza’s defensive instances saw the forward drop back and poke the ball free, sending Jesus Bueno onto the ball. Bueno quickly got possession to Daniel Gazdag who turned and crossed the center stripe slowly looking for the open space. With Carranza making the forward decoy run, the Hungarian connected with Uhre on the left side of the 18. Dribbling and looking to feed Carranza for his second against Miami, the Dane ripped a centering pass that forced a sliding block from David Ruiz that crashed off the crossbar and in to re-establish the Union’s three-goal advantage.
Carranza leads the Union in Team of the Matchday appearances with his Matchday 21 honor his fourth of 2023. Carranza was on the first Team of the Matchday list for the opening weekend of matches and also is a two-time MLS Player of the Matchday with two-goal performances in Matchday 15 and 17.
Carranza and the rest of the Boys in Blue are back in action this weekend as they had to Atlanta United FC for an Eastern Conference showdown. Kick off from the ATL is set for 4 p.m. ET with the match on FOX, Fox Deportes and free with MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
