Philadelphia Union midfielder Jamiro Monteiro not only started in Cape Verde's opener in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday afternoon but guided the team to a 1-0 win over Ethiopia.
Monteiro earned his 17th cap in the Group A opener and played 76 minutes which included being on the field the game's only goal that came just before the halftime whistle.
Monteiro is one of two members of Philadelphia Union playing in the tournament, with defender Olivier Mbaizo on the roster for the hosts, Cameroon. Both Union players were on the winning sides and are currently tied atop Group A with three points each. Monteiro and Cape Verde will be back in action on Thursday when they face off against Burkina Faso while Mbaizo's Cameroonian squad take on Ethiopia the same day.
