Homegrown defender signs new deal through 2030-31 season following breakout campaign

Philadelphia Union announced today that Homegrown defender Neil Pierre has signed a new contract through the 2030-31 season, with an option for the 2031-32 season.

Pierre, 19, has established himself as a key contributor to the Union's back line during the 2026 season. In 14 MLS appearances, he has scored four goals, setting a new club single-season record for goals by a defender while helping Philadelphia climb the Eastern Conference standings.

“Neil is one of the brightest young center backs in our league, and he has consistently made the most of the opportunities he’s earned throughout his development within our club,” said Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Jon Scheer. “His physical profile, ability to defend aggressively in 1v1 situations, and composure and confidence on the ball make him a model fit for both our game model and the demands of the modern game. He has taken significant steps forward this season, and his progression is another example of the pathway we’ve established from our Academy through Union II to the First Team. We’re excited to extend his future with the club and look forward to supporting his continued development and growth.”

Pierre's breakout season has earned recognition at both the league and international levels. He was ranked No. 7 on Major League Soccer's 2026 22 Under 22 list, which recognizes the league's top young players, and received his first senior U.S. Men's National Team call-up in 2026.

Pierre initially signed with the Union as a Homegrown on February 4, 2025, before joining Danish side Lyngby Boldklub on loan on January 22, 2026. Joining as part of the Union’s strategic partnership with the club, Pierre made 10 appearances and scored four goals, helping Lyngby capture the Danish second-tier title.

A graduate of YSC Academy, Pierre progressed through the Union Academy and Philadelphia Union II before earning a place with the First Team. He previously represented the United States at the U-17 and U-19 levels before receiving his first senior national team call-up.
