As it stands, the Philadelphia Union are in second place in the East and third in the Supporter’s Shield standings, dropping in both after falling 1-0 to New York Red Bulls on the road over the weekend.
The loss was just their sixth of the year, but despite the unfavorable result, Head Coach Bradley Carnell ensured that his players’ effort and commitment on the training pitch since then has been unwavering.
“Alex Ferguson said it best, ‘in order to achieve and be number one, you have to train like number two.’ So, we had our biggest loads of the year these last two days, and credit to the boys for one showing a response from the loss and to just getting down to the grinding again, just getting onto the work,” Carnell said.
Saturday’s match marks Philadelphia Union’s second meeting with Chicago Fire this year. When they traveled to the windy city back on June 25th, the Boys in Blue won by way of a penalty goal taken by Bruno Damiani. Their opponent now sits in ninth place in the conference, just above the playoff line with 39 points after securing a five-match unbeaten streak. Most recently, they defeated St. Louis City 3-2 thanks to goals from Hugo Cuypers, Philip Zinckernagel, and Brian Gutiérrez.
Just like last time the pair faced off, goalkeeper Andrew Rick will step up between the posts, making his 11th start this year in place of three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Andre Blake. During his press conference, Carnell announced that the Jamaican team leader will miss the next couple of weeks due to an injury suffered against Red Bull.
With Philadelphia aiming to reclaim the top spot and Chicago Fire pushing to stay above the playoff line, Saturday’s match is shaping up to be one to watch. Tune in with MLS Season Pass on Apple TV for all the action!
