There is just one US Open Cup Semifinal spot remaining, and on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Union will look to claim it as their own, taking on New York Red Bulls in a rescheduled quarterfinal matchup at Subaru Park.
Philadelphia’s cup campaign so far has been a successful one – so far, they’ve defeated two USL Championship sides in Indy Eleven and Pittsburgh Riverhounds to earn a matchup against their Eastern Conference rivals. The pair was originally scheduled to meet back on July 9th, but inclement weather forced the match to be postponed. Just like it was scheduled back in July, Philadelphia and New York will go head-to-head twice in one week, first on the riverfront, then again on Saturday in Major League Soccer play at the newly-named Sports Illustrated Stadium.
Although the matchups are just days apart, fans could see two different matchday rosters as Jakob Glesnes will be available for Wednesday’s match, but out due to yellow card accumulation for the weekend’s regular season match. Otherwise, the entire group, other than Ian Glavinovich, is healthy and expected to be available for selection for the busy week ahead.
New York Red Bull comes to town just two days after a competitive 2-1 Sunday Night Soccer win against Real Salt Lake. A 99th minute goal gave them an important three points that kept them close to the playoff line, now in 10th place.
