Q&A with Indiana Vassilev

#PHIvATL | Indiana Vassilev

Philadelphia Union is at the top of the Eastern Conference standings, and Indiana Vassilev, one of the team's newest signings, has made an impact as a frequent starter and workhorse in the midfield, contributeing one goal and three assists over eight starts and 14 matches played.

Off the field, he's built a reputation as one of the most energetic and enthusiastic players in the locker room, helping foster a team culture that's reflected in their recent run of form.

Ahead of their final stretch of May games before pausing for the June international break, Vassilev reflected on his first few months with the U and what's next for he and his team.

It's been three months since you joined the club before the official start of the season back in February. What's been your initial impression?

I had a very positive initial impression of the team and the city, and that hasn’t waned at all. The culture within the club is second to none and the constant strive to be better are two things that stood out to me.

The team is at the top of the East and near the front of the Supporters Shield race through matchday 15 -- what's it been like to find so much success shortly after reuniting with Head Coach Bradley Carnell and his staff?

Finding success early is always a positive! That is a massive credit to the players at this club and their ability to learn and adapt to new systems. Everyone has bought in and the team feels very cohesive. We're all focused on the task at hand and our performances have shown that. Obviously, I have had BC and his staff before and know that they are capable of what they are showing currently and more. I feel very blessed to be a part of this group.

This team seems really close on and off the field already -- how'd that come to be and how have you seen connections in the locker room impact play on the field?

From the start, I could see that the team was already very close and the banter within the locker room was already top. I believe that's due to the players having built up trust and respect through training and play laying games. You grow closer as a team through joyful and frustrating moments, and these guys have had plenty of those and that’s why I believe we have been so successful. There's trust, respect, and a clear vision shared between us all which is a recipe for success.

What are your personal goals for the season?

Personally, I try to give my 100% every training day and game day. That’s how I believe you gain the trust of your teammates, which is my goal. The closer we are as a group, the more successful I believe we'll become. With team success comes individual success as well, but overall focusing on the team performance is my goal.

That being said, what are your team's collective goals going forward?

Win MLS Cup.
