We are taking a deep dive into each month of the season to look at each of the matchups! Today we're focused on the Union's July schedule which features a lengthy road trip for most of the month before the wrapping up with a playoff rivalry showdown.

PHI @ Atlanta United FC
Sun., July 2 | 4:00PM ET

July starts off in the national spotlight as Philadelphia Union spends Independence Day weekend battling Atlanta United FC on Sunday, July 2nd with the match broadcast on FOX in addition to MLS Season Pass.

The Five Stripes will look quite different from the squad that Boys in Blue encountered in 2022 with Josef Martinez expected to be departing the club during this offseason. The two sides battled twice this past season with the Union grabbing four points from the two contests highlighted by a 4-1 win that saw goals from all three members of the Union’s attacking trio plus a 95th minute goal from homegrown Nathan Harriel. Atlanta missed the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second-straight season in 2022 and are expected to rebound and rebuild with Miles Robinson and Brad Guzan fully healthy in 2023.

PHI @ LA Galaxy
Sat., July 8 | 10:30PM ET

The Boys in Blue head out to Hollywood against in 2023 but this time to take on the superstars from the LA Galaxy. The Union defense will be tested in July as they face off against Chicharito, Riqui Puig in Carson in a late night battle. The Galaxy look to build off their strong 2022 campaign where they finished fourth in the West and were knocked out of the postseason by their El Trafico rivals. The Union and the Galaxy haven’t faced off since 2019 when Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a first-half brace but things have been quite difference since the two sides last met with the Union making deep runs in the playoffs each year since while the Galaxy’s first playoff appearance since 2019 was just last year.

PHI @ Nashville SC
Wed., July 12 | 8:30PM ET

After playing in the Western Conference in 2022, Nashville SC is back in the East again which will set up a battle of two MVP-caliber midfielders in Daniel Gazdag vs. the reigning Landon Donovan MVP Hany Mukhtar. While Nashville SC has only been in MLS since 2020, the matchups between the two sides have been quite memorable with the Union getting to their first Eastern Conference Final in 2021 via a penalty kick win. Last year the two teams met in the opener of GEODIS Park where Andre Blake put on a show with key first-half saves which mean the first goal in Nashville’s new stadium came from Philly’s Mikael Uhre.

PHI v NYCFC
Sat., July 15 | 7:30PM ET

Quite possibly on the field one of the biggest rivalries in the Eastern Conference has been when the Union and New York City FC meet up. The two sides are tied at an Eastern Conference Championship apiece with the Pigeons looking like they’d be headed back to MLS Cup in 2022. Enter Andre Blake who showed why he was the Goalkeeper of the Year with a momentum shifting save that quickly saw the Union bag two goals in two minutes to turn the game upside down. Since the 2021 Eastern Conference title match, the Union gotten their revenge in 2022 with victories in all three matches. You won’t want to miss the latest chapter as Philly battles New York.
