Union Academy completes sweep of CSA

Recap-U1715-June5

Philadelphia Union Academy completed the sweep over the Cedar Stars Academy of Monmouth with the U17s and U15s each getting wins with the MLS NEXT Playoffs around the corner.

The U15s racked up a big win on Saturday afternoon, knocking out CSA by a 6-0 margin. Controlling the math from the opening whistle, a pair of Union players were rewarded with a pair of goals each. Gael Medrano and Antonio Horozoglou each picked up braces on the road with both Luke Zielinski and Henry Bernstein rounding out the final score to push the club's winning streak to five-straight matches.

The U17s claimed all three points thanks to a late-winner from Ian Abbey as the Boys in Blue grabbed a 3-2 road win. Still battling fatigue from the club's successful trip at the MLS Academy Cup in Atlanta, the club were tested by CSA. Sam Jones and Marcello Mazzolla put the U17s ahead 2-0 in the first half but CSA battled back with a pair of goals that had the Union on their heels. The U17s dug deep and used the Union's defensive philosophy to net the game winning with a turnover in the midfield quickly sparking at attack for for Abbey. Collecting the ball near the edge of the center circle, he raced past a pair of defenders to and riffled a match winner from 25 yards out!

Both sides continue MLS NEXT play this weekend when they host Bethesda SC on Saturday, June 12th, at Subaru Park. The U15s will kick off the action from Chester with kick off set for 4 p.m. ET followed by the U17s at 6:30 p.m.
