CHESTER, Pa. (July 23, 2018)
– Following last week’s Quarterfinals victory over Orlando City SC in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Philadelphia Union will play Chicago Fire in the next round of the competition. After U.S. Soccer conducted a draw today from their headquarters in Chicago, that Semifinal contest was determined to take place at Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday, August 8 and is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Tickets for the Semifinal against Chicago will go on-sale on Wednesday, July 25 at 10:00 a.m. ET. Season Ticket Members will be able to purchase their same seats at a discounted rate. All Season Ticket Members will receive an email with details when those tickets are available through their Account Manager.
The Union defeated Orlando by a 1-0 score last week to advance to the Semifinals for the fourth time in club history. Should the Union advance over Chicago, the club would face the winner of Houston Dynamo-Los Angeles FC in the Final. Also determined as a result of today’s draw, the Union would be at either Houston or Los Angeles in a prospective Final.
The Union are in the Semifinals of the U.S. Open Cup for the fifth time in club history, previously reaching this round in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Philadelphia is 2-1 all-time in the Semifinals, having defeated FC Dallas in 2014 and the Fire in 2015. The Union lost to Sporting Kansas City during this round in 2012.
This will be the Union’s second-ever Open Cup match vs. Chicago, joining the aforementioned Semifinals clash in 2015, which was won by Philadelphia, 1-0, on a Sebastien Le Toux goal.
First held in 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States and the country’s oldest annual tournament for team sports. 2018 marks the 105th edition of the tournament, which saw the Union finish as runners-up in both 2014 and 2015.
The Union next play on Wednesday, July 25 in an inter-Conference clash at Houston (9:00 p.m. ET / Live Well Network).
