Big Play Breakdown: Winning second balls, counterpressing, and forward first

aaronson cincinnati

In this week's Big Play Breakdown, presented by Toyota, we look at how there can be a method to what appears to be chaotic moments in soccer. The specific moment of the match we focus on shows how Philly gets bodies around the passes forward so they can win second balls and look to penetrate FC Cincinnati's defense before it is set.

However, if Cincy gets back in shape, the Union quickly recognize the need to rotate play and pull apart the home side's tight lines.

The clip ends with a wonderful instance of midfield pressing by Haris Medunjanin and Brenden Aaronson, followed by a confident forward-first pass from Auston Trusty. Even though Trusty's pass doesn't find its intended target, that willingness to play a first-time ball makes all the difference when you want to create chances in transition play.
