German Bundesliga club 1899 Hoffenheim announced today that Philadelphia Union assistant coach Dick Schreuder has accepted a job coaching alongside his brother Alfred Schreuder. Alfred was recently named head coach at 1899 Hoffenheim. Schreuder will leave the Union following the June 8 match against New York Red Bulls.

“This morning, 1899 Hoffenheim of the German Bundesliga announced the addition of Dick Schreuder as an assistant coach," Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner explained. "Dick has the tremendous opportunity to coach alongside his brother, Alfred, who was recently named Hoffenheim’s head coach. All of us at the Philadelphia Union are thrilled for Dick and his family.

"This was an easy decision for us to support Dick as he makes this move to join his brother, and we would like to thank him for his service and hard work during his time with our club.

“As part of our arrangement with Hoffenheim, Dick will remain with the Union through our June 8 game vs. the New York Red Bulls, and we will compensate for his departure internally until the end of the season.”

Schreuder joined the Union ahead of their 2018 campaign that saw the club reach the playoffs for the second time in three seasons. He has worked alongside Jim Curtin, BJ Callaghan, Pat Noonan, and Oka Nikolov during his time in Philadelphia.

“It’s been a pleasure coaching alongside Dick Schreuder for the past two seasons and I wish him nothing but the best as he takes this new position with Hoffenheim," Curtin said. "Dick has a rare opportunity to coach alongside his brother, and he has my full support. We’ve learned a lot from each other since he came here from the Netherlands, and I know he’ll be successful in the Bundesliga.

"As a head coach, it’s a rewarding feeling when your assistants are recognized for their hard work with opportunities such as this, to coach in one of the biggest leagues in Europe. I’d like to thank Dick for all he’s done for the Philadelphia Union during his time here and once again wish him well as he takes this step.”

As Tanner said, Schreuder's final match with the Union will be the June 8 rivalry game against New York Red Bulls. The entire Union organization wishes him nothing but the best moving forward!
